Brown notches fifth career USMTS win on the road at Rice Lake

April 26, 2012

RICE LAKE, Wis. -- As of Thursday afternoon, Chris Brown had four career USMTS victories to his credit – all of them coming at dirt ovals within a one-hour drive from his home in Spring, Texas.

After the checkered flag fell later in the evening, Brown had his fifth career win with a triumph in the USMTS National Championship Series event at the Rice Lake Speedway in Rice Lake, Wis. – nearly 1,300 miles north of his front porch.

Brown started on the inside of the second row next to his teammate, Kelly Shryock, while Jason Miller and Jason Gross – both of nearby Osceola, Wis. – shared the front row for the start of the 40-lapper.

Miller secured the top spot at the drop of the green flag but caution slowed the pace when Mike Anderson, who led the first eight laps of this race last year, suffered mechanical problems with just three laps in the books.

Back under green, Miller again took control with Brown and Shryock slugging it out for the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, last year’s winner Ryan Gustin was steadily moving forward from the 17th starting spot in the 30-car field.

Midway through the race, Brown began to apply heavy pressure to Miller and wrestled the lead away with 19 circuits remaining.

With no more yellow flags to assist the drivers chasing him, Brown was able to cruise to the $4,000 win with Miller holding off Shryock for second place.

Johnny Scott and Rodney Sanders were fourth and fifth, while Gross, Jason Hughes, Gustin, Jon Tesch and Zack VanderBeek rounded out the first ten to cross the finish line.

Passing nine cars, Gustin earned his first Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award and also maintained his lead in the USMTS National Championship standings by a single point over Hughes.

Scott is just three markers behind Hughes, with Shryock and Sanders rounding out the top five entering Friday night’s show at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.

Fastenal Company is joining forces with the Mississippi Thunder Speedway to present the USMTS National Championship Series as part of the track’s 2012 season opener.

“We are expecting car counts to be upwards of 60-70 cars for this event – not counting all of the competitors who will be on hand for the other support divisions that night as well,” said promoter Bob Timm. “I really think this could be one of our biggest events of the entire season. All of the best and most popular Modified races in the country will be on hand with our own local racers as well.”

Also on the card for the 7:30 p.m. spectacular will be the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA B-Mods, plus Street Stocks and Pure Stocks.

For more details about the 3/8-mile high-banked dark clay oval, visit the track’s website at www.mississippithunder.com.

On Saturday, the series wraps up the weekend tripleheader with another $4,000-to-win showdown at the Deer Creek in Spring Valley, Minn.
