Shryock returns to Deer Creek winners circle, snags first Featherlite Fall Jamboree win since 2005

Shryock returns to Deer Creek winners circle, snags first Featherlite Fall Jamboree win since 2005

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- The old saying ‘Good things come to those who wait’ is one that Kelly Shryock can attest to after notching a wire-to-wire victory Friday night at the Deer Creek Speedway during Round 2 of the 15th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree.

The 40-lap USMTS main event rolled onto the track shortly after midnight with Shryock on the pole and a $4,000 top prize up for grabs.

The nine-time USMTS National Champion immediately took command with Eric Pember, Jeremy Payne and newly-crowned USMTS National Champion Rodney Sanders in pursuit.

Shryock built a ten-car-length lead by lap 9 when the race’s pace slowed for a caution flag when Sanders pulled to the top of turn 4 with mechanical issues. About five hours earlier, Sanders finished second to Ryan Gustin in the delayed Thursday night feature which opened the Friday night show.

Shortly after the restart, most of the field began to fall in line as the middle groove of the track started to blacken from the rubber built up after 417 laps previously run on the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval Friday night.

From that point forward, nobody could get close to Shryock as the Fertile, Iowa, veteran sailed into the winners circle to record his 180th career USMTS victory and his first at Deer Creek Speedway in 44 USMTS events here since May 26, 2007.

“It’s been a long time,” Shryock said in victory lane. “We’re not the biggest funded team but I’ll tell you there’s nobody works harder than our group. We just keep working and we’re not giving up.”

Shryock’s emotions got the better of him when USMTS announcer Lon Oelke reminded him that his late father and legendary racer, Bob Shryock, was looking down on him tonight.

“We had a little talk with him right before we went out,” Shryock added.

Shryock’s second win of the 2013 campaign was worth $4,000. It was his tenth overall USMTS win at ‘The Creek’ and his first at the Featherlite Fall Jamboree since opening night at the seventh annual event in 2005. He won the first-ever USMTS main event at the Deer Creek Speedway on May 25, 2002.

Pember’s career-best USMTS finish never happened as a flat tire on the final lap ended his strong run. His misfortune helped Payne notch a second-place finish to go with his fourth earlier in the night.

2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn finished third for the second time tonight while Terry Phillips and Stormy Scott rounded out the top 5. Sixth through tenth were Johnny Scott, Joey Jensen, Bryan Rowland, Mike Sorensen and Brandon Davis.

Saturday's explosive finale will feature the hottest dirt modified pilots in the nation battling for one of 30 spots in the main event that will take the green flag three cars wide and ten rows deep. Drivers will battle for a $6,000 top prize and at least $900 just to take the green flag.

And if that isn’t enough, drivers failing to make Saturday’s finale will have a chance at one of 30 spots in the annual Non-Qualifiers Race which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays $400 to start.

The annual Bean Bag Tournament begins earlier in the day at noon. Breakfast will be served by the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in the hospitality area from 8-11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Deer Creek Speedway is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval which sits on 60 acres with one of America’s most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes and an adjoining campground. For more information visit www.deercreekspeedway.com online or call 877-DCS-RACE.

The 15th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree is made possible with the support of Featherlite Trailers, Casey’s General Stores, Dakota Bumper, Husqvarna, L&D Ag, Red Tail Tackle, Weber Auto Parts NAPA and many others.
