Hughes continues to soar, scores USMTS trophy at Salina Highbanks Speedway

PRYOR CREEK, Okla.—Jason Hughes has been a frequent flyer on USMTS airlines as of late, and Saturday night at the Salina Highbanks Speedway he piloted his familiar No. 12 Hughes Racing Chassis to another perfect landing in Widow Wax Victory Lane.

Following up on his run from 27th to sixth in Friday’s show at the Outlaw Motor Speedway, Hughes started eighth in Saturday’s 37-lap nightcap and took the lead for good on the 17th go-around to collect his seventh $3,000 winner’s check of the 2016 campaign.

Four cautions during the first dozen laps slowed the pace early on, but eventually the track stayed clean and green for the final 25 laps which produced a lot of traffic for the leaders to navigate.

“That was a long race,” Hughes said during his victory speech. “Every time we tried to pass a lapped car they were all over the race track. I got pretty ticked off a couple of times, so I had to calm down there a little bit and then get back to work.”

His nemesis over the past year or so—Texan Rodney Sanders—put up a valiant fight. He never let Hughes get more than a couple of car lengths away, but every time Sanders showed his nose, Hughes was able to shut the door.

“We had a heck of a race car,” the defending USMTS national champion added. “I don’t think anybody could roll through the middle like we could, so when you’ve got a car that’s that good, it makes it a whole lot more comfortable.”

Cade Dillard led the first seven laps from the front row before relinquishing the top spot to Sanders, who led four circuits before Jeremy Payne took over the captain’s seat. Sanders got it back three laps later, but only stayed there two more times around before Hughes grabbed the lead in a three-wide dog fight for the lead down the back-stretch.

The win was the fourth at Salina for Hughes, who captured the first-ever USMTS event here in 2004. It was the 140th of his career, and extended his points lead in the MSD Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports.

Ryan Gustin raced from the 13th starting spot to finish third behind Hughes and Sanders, giving all three podium spots to the owners of the last six USMTS titles.

Last year’s rookie titlist, Jesse Sobbing, started behind Gustin on the inside of the eighth row and followed ‘The Reaper’ to a fourth-place finish while Payne held on for fifth.

Joe Duvall, who is a past track champion here, claimed the sixth spot and Friday’s winner, Terry Phillips, passed nine competitors to get seventh.

Dereck Ramirez earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award by racing from 22nd on the 28-car grid to eighth at the finish line while Mike Jergens and Chad Wheeler rounded out the top 10.

Up next, the series heads north for a five-race Memorial Day Weekend vacation beginning Wednesday, May 25, at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa.
