Stormy Scott stays red hot, dominates Widow Wax Summersota Nationals

FERGUS FALLS, Minn.—Stormy Scott dominated the first two nights of qualifying at the inaugural Widow Wax Summersota Nationals, and much to the dismay of his fellow racers he got even better Saturday night.

The 26-year-old from Arroyo Hondo, N.M., took the lead from Cade Dillard after the race’s first and only caution on lap 22 and then checked out.

“I knew Cade would probably get a pretty good jump on that restart, but I also knew that if I could get a run down the hill—because I couldn’t take off with him—that I might have a shot,” Scott recalled in victory lane. “I guess I got lucky on that.

“He went in there and did the exact right thing and got on the bottom where there was moisture. I just rolled the outside and got by him.”

Although Scott struggled with lapped traffic at times during the final 50 orbits around the I-94 Speedway, so did most of his pursuers including Johnny Scott who finished in the runner-up spot nearly nine seconds behind his twin brother.

Stormy Scott led the 26-car field to the green but it was Dillard who pulled away at the start and set a torrid pace for the first 22 laps until the yellow flag waved for Clayton Wagamon’s crippled race car.

When the green light came back on, Dillard had Stormy Scott right with him and the two raced side-by-side down the back-stretch with Scott inching ahead at the line to lead lap 23.

That was the last anybody saw of Stormy Scott as he drove away uncontested for the final 50 circuits en route to a $15,000 payday.

“These guys that finished behind me are the best in the country in my opinion,” a smiling Stormy Scott added. “I’m just glad to be standing here.”

The win was the 37th of his United States Modified Touring Series career, breaking a tie on the all-time wins list with Jon Tesch.

Ryan Gustin battled with Johnny Scott for the last half of the race and crossed the finish line third, but was disqualified during post-race technical inspections for an engine setback infraction.

That moved Dillard to third with Jason Hughes and Rodney Sanders completing the top five.

Travis Saurer got sixth, Lucas Schott was seventh, Zack VanderBeek came from 16th to eighth, Jesse Sobbing took the ninth spot and Dereck Ramirez held on for tenth.

The tireless touring titans of the USMTS are on summer vacation for nearly three weeks. They’ll return to battle on Thursday, July 14, at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn.
