USMTS Hunt for the Casey's Cup enters home stretch with five-day Labor Day Weekend excursion



One week from today just one event will remain in the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental and the crowning of the 19th United States Modified Touring Series national champion.

But before we get there, the rugged USMTS road warriors have five nights of racing on five dirt ovals in Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

The final surge begins this Wednesday, Aug. 30, when the series returns to the Kossuth County Speedway in Algona, Iowa, for the first time since 2010 and wraps up Sunday, Sept. 3, at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa.



KOSSUTH COUNTY SPEEDWAY – ALGONA, IA
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 30, 2017

Presented by Beck’s and Scott Cook Construction, Wednesday’s event at the Kossuth County Speedway will also feature Sport Mods racing for $1,000 to win. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing to follow. Adult tickets are $15, juniors (ages 11-15) are $10 and kids 10 & under are free. A pit pass is $30.

Current points leader Jason Hughes is a two-time—and most recent—winner at the 51-year-old Martin County Fairgrounds. Other past USMTS feature winners include Mark Noble, Kelly Shryock, Ryan Gustin (two wins), Ryan Ruter, Johnny Scott, Rodney Sanders and Jason Krohn.

Friday’s show at the Fayette County Speedway will be the fifth visit by the USMTS since 2007 when Jason Krohn won the inaugural event here. Jake Neal picked up his first and only USMTS victory the following year, and Ryan Gustin won here in 2009. The series returned last year with Zack VanderBeek getting the win.

The pit gate opens at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 4:30, hot laps begin at 6:30 and racing starts at 7. Adult tickets are $20, kids ages 11 & under get in for free and pit passes are $30.

Saturday’s 12th Annual Labor Day Duel presented by Barclay Landscaping will be the 98th night of USMTS racing at ‘The Creek.’ Kelly Shryock won the first-ever race here on May 25, 2002, but since that say defending USMTS national champion Jason Hughes has a series-best 14 career victories here.

Shryock is second on the all-time list with 10 wins here while Rodney Sanders has collected eight checkered flags. Tim Donlinger and Terry Phillips have five wins each. Ryan Gustin, Jason Cummins and Brad Waits have four apiece. Zack VanderBeek, Joey Jensen and Brandon Davis have each won three times.

Two-time winners include Corey Dripps, Jason Krohn, Ryan Ruter, Stormy Scott, Lucas Schott and, most recently, Cade Dillard who won here Memorial Day Weekend.

The stars and cars of the USMTS will invade the Cresco Speedway on Sunday for the 15th Annual USMTS Cresco Bowl and the next-to-last event in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental.

This will be the 22nd time the USMTS has churned the Mighty Howard County Fairgrounds clay. Mike Spaulding won the first-ever race here in 2002 and Rodney Sanders was the most recent winner, winning the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup event here the past two years. In between, the checkered flag has waved for Kelly Shryock nine times, twice for Jason Krohn and Al Hejna, and one time for Alan Mondus, Zack VanderBeek, Corey Dripps and Jason Hughes.

The pit gate opens at 4 p.m., grandstands open for seating at 5, hot laps begin at 6 and the first race hits the track at 6:45. Grandstand admission is $20 for adults (18 and older), $10 for teens (13-17) and free for kids 12 & under.
