Hughes vs. Scott: Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup concludes Thursday in Featherlite Fall Jamboree lid-lifter

The time has come for the 19th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree which takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-23, at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

The world’s elite Modified and B-Mod drivers racing for nearly $150,000 in posted prize money. As of Wednesday, there are 102 Modified and 55 B-Mod drivers pre-entered for this year’s event.

Fans will witness a complete program all three nights, with $5,000 going to the Modified winner on the first two nights while Saturday’s winner will pocket a cool $10,000. B-Mods will battle for $750 to win Thursday, $1,000 to win Friday and $1,200 to win Saturday.

Thursday is the final event in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental with the crowning of the 2017 USMTS national champion at the conclusion of the night's main event.

For the fourth time in eight years, Jason Hughes comes into the Featherlite Fall Jamboree as the points leader and he hasn’t failed to deliver yet.

In 2010, he simply needed to sign in, fire the motor and pull onto the track for his heat race to earn enough points to clinch the crown.

Two years ago, Hughes entered the night with a delicate four-point lead over then two-time defending USMTS national champion Rodney Sanders. Hughes was uncontested as he led every lap of the main event to secure the win and the USMTS crown.

He punctuated that effort by sweeping all three nights of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree in 2015, including an historic four-car battle on Friday night between himself, Sanders, Brandon Davis and Joe Duvall.

It was a battle for the ages on opening night of the last year’s event as a season-long battle to become the 2016 USMTS national champion came down to the final turn on Thursday night.

Trailing Hughes by 10 points coming into the race, Cade Dillard came from the 12th starting spot to earn his first Featherlite Fall Jamboree feature win, but by finishing second Hughes edged Dillard by a mere three points to claim his second straight USMTS national championship and third overall.

This year, Hughes has just one night of racing standing in his way—and 101 other drivers including Stormy Scott who trails Hughes by 43 markers coming into Thursday’s final points race.

If Scott can win the feature race and lead the most laps while doing it, Hughes will need to finish no worse than 15th at the checkered flag. Regardless of what Hughes does, Scott will need to finish third or better to claim his first USMTS national championship.

Here’s how the top 15 shake out entering Thursday night’s finale in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental:

New for 2017, a second Non-Qualifiers Race for the Modifieds has been added to Thursday's program which will pay $700 to win and no less than $100 to start for each of the 24 starters.

After the action ends on Thursday, the public is invited to the pit area to hang out with drivers and crews for a live DJ and karaoke under the tent following the races.

On Friday morning, the annual Club Car Jamboree Open golf scramble for racers, crew members, event officials and fans will tee off at 10 a.m. at the Willow Creek Golf Course, located about two miles from the Rochester Airport. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. The top three teams will score cash prizes and many other awesome prizes will also be awarded.

Back by popular demand for the sixth straight year, The Dweebs will be rocking the Deer Creek Speedway party tent Friday night under the big top immediately following the final race of the night. Family owned and operated since 1987, America's Favorite Party Band will be playing free for all race attendees and all ages.

The fun doesn’t end there. Bragging rights for this year’s Jamboree Bean Bag Tournament near the campground area begins with sign-in at 11:00 a.m. and the battle begins at high noon.

Saturday’s annual Modified Non-Qualifiers Race will dole out $2,000 to the winner prior to the $10,000-to-win championship race which will start a minimum of 30 cars three-wide on the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval. The Non-Qualifiers Race will also have 30 cars on the track.

For early risers with a hankering for a delicious hot breakfast, the Bear Creek Lutheran Church will be back again this year serving up breakfast in the concession area on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings from 8-11 a.m.
