Grant Junghans Memorial set for Aug. 17 at Lakeside Speedway

Celebrating the life of one of the most popular dirt modified racers of all time, the 3rd Annual Grant Junghans Memorial is set for Friday, Aug. 17, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

Fans can call today and throughout next week to reserve tickets for the blockbuster event. The USMTS office will be taking phone orders at (515) 832-7944 and mailing tickets for orders received through Monday. After that, pre-ordered tickets will be available at the Will Call window on race day at the track.

Presented by Spike Hardcore Energy, the 3rd Annual Grant Junghans Memorial will be part of the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup with a top prize of $10,002 to win and $1,202 to start the main event. Non-qualifiers will take home no less than $152, Long Tow Awards of $500, $400, $300, $200 and $200 will be awarded and and dozens of other cash prizes and contingencies will also be up for grabs.

Holley USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will round-out the three-division program with each of those two classes battling for $1,002 to win and $102 to start. USRA Summit Weekly Racing Series national points and CP-Carrillo Central Region points and Lakeside Speedway track points will be awarded in all three classes.

The pit gate opens Friday at 3 p.m. with spectator gates opening at 5:30. The drivers meeting will convene at 7 with hot laps slated for 7:30 and racing at 8 p.m.

For every adult, junior, senior and suite ticket sold—as well as every adult pit pass--$5 will go to the Grant Junghans Memorial Fund which supports research and funding for childhood cancer. Every Kids ticket or pit pass will have $3 earmarked for the foundation as well as $25 from every entry fee among the three classes.

The racing world lost one of its finest ambassadors in March 2016, and the Grant Junghans Memorial race is an opportunity for his family, friends, fans and fellow competitors to remember the good times and racing memories shared in his 27 years with us.

Junghans was first diagnosed with cancer in February of 2010. Despite on-again off-again chemotherapy treatments and numerous surgeries, he never lost his sense of humor, fighting spirit or natural-born tendency to be decent to others.

He was also the 2009 USMTS Rookie of the Year and that award has since been renamed in his honor.

Lucas Schott of Chatfield, Minn., topped the inaugural event in 2016 and Rodney Sanders took home the one-of-a-kind Grant Junghans Memorial trophy last year.

General admission tickets are $25, Juniors ages 13-16 and Senior 62 and up are $20, kids ages 7-12 are $10 and children 6 and under get in for free. Seats in the air-conditioned suites are $35. Pit passes are $40 or $20 for kids ages 6-10. Children 5 and under are free in the pits.
