Shryock takes U.S. Modified Touring Series checkers at Chateau Raceway

LANSING, Minn. (Aug. 22, 2001) - Kelly Shryock, who in 2000 could not win one USMTS race all season, picked up his fourth win of the 2001 season in the USMTS Wednesday as the series made it second stop to the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn.

Fans were treated to some of the best Modified racing ever at the Speedway as drivers used the whole racetrack, passing cars on every lap.

Jason Hughes started the race from the pole position with Jay Ihrke to the outside. Ihrke jumped into the early lead with Hughes right on his bumper. On lap 16, Tim Donlinger went by on the outside and started to pull away from the Hughes and Ihrke Modifieds before a yellow was thrown on lap 18 for the stalled car of Mark Noble. Noble would go to the pit area and change a right front flat tire, then come back on the track in last place.

On the restart, Donlinger had trouble with the front end of his car and coming out of turn 4 on lap 21 he spun his #21 M&M Modified in front of all cars, bringing out another yellow flag. Hughes' #12 Hughes Chassis was also sitting in turn 3 with some rear end troubles.

This gave the lead back to Ihrke, who went into turn 1 on the restart with the #65 Kraft Modified of Tommy Myer running second, getting into the rear of the Ihrke car and spinning Ihrke, collecting the top 5 cars. The call was made that Myer caused the yellow and he was the only car charged and would have to restart at the rear of the field. This gave the lead back to Ihrke with Shryock on his bumper.

Shryock took the lead from Ihrke on lap 29.

The man on the move was Noble, who was in 20th position on lap 18 from the flat tire. A piece of debris was on the track with four laps to go and that debris was knocked off the track by Noble so the racing stayed green to give fans their moneys worth as drivers were getting into lapped traffic. Noble was charging very hard and went by Ihrke on the white flag lap and had his sights on the #3 Harris Modified of Shryock. Noble went into turn 3 very hard and came out of turn 4 with a good run as Shryock stayed on the bottom behind a lapped car, but Noble would come up a bumper short of the win.

The last points race in the North Region will be Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D. For more information, call the USMTS office at 515-832-7944.
