Hughes wins USMTS North Region finale at Park Jefferson

JEFFERSON, S.D. (Aug. 30, 2001) - Jason Hughes Colcord, OK started the Simpson Race Products A-main from the pole position and lead all 35 laps enroute to his fifth win of the season. This race sponsored by Harris Auto Racing was the last north region points race.

Kelly Shryock LeMars, IA already had the north region points wrapped up heading into this final race.

The battle was between Hughes who was third and Mike Chasteen Peoria, IL who was leading Hughes by five points. With leading all laps Hughes received the three bonus points and passed Chasteen by three points.

The win did not come easy for Hughes as he had some very tough competition right behind him. Mark Noble Blooming Prairie, MN who started eighth had worked himself into contention and was going to pass Hughes coming out of turn two when the #74 Dirt Works got into the side of the Hughes car. Noble did spin on this incident and brought out the yellow flag.

On the restart Willy Kraft and Mike Chasteen had worked there way up to the top five and had their sights set on the leader. The last yellow of the night was brought out with three laps to go. On the restart Hughes jumped out to a two-car-length lead with Chasteen working the high side of the speedway and Willy Kraft working the low side.

On the high green Mike Chasteen had pulled up even with Hughes as the two drivers went into turns 1-2 Chasteen would push high and Hughes would lead down the backstretch. They would come out of turn four three wide at the finish.

Hughes won with Chasteen second and Kraft third. Tommy Myer continued his hot streak with another top five finish coming home fourth and Brad McEwan would round out the top five.

Greg Peck who started the race from the tail as a track provisional by points was the hard charger, working all the way to ninth.

The Harris Auto Racing heat races were won by Hughes, Gary March, Shryock, Bruce Hanford and Denny Johnson. The Midwest Motorsports B-mains were won by Jim Thies and Joe Kosiski.

Thirty-nine cars checked in for the racing action with a very good crowd witnessing some great modified racing.
