Shryock two-for-two in USMTS action with win at Thundervalley

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (April 6, 2002) - Kelly Shryock Lemars, IA use a little luck and a great pass to win his second straight USMTS main event feature win after passing local racer and pole sitter Brad Green Johnson, AR on lap 39 of the Delta Motorsports 40 lap event.

Shryock started the race from the fourth row outside and had worked his way to third by lap fourteen following Blooming Prairie, MN driver Tommy Myer to the front. Myer started the race from the fourth row inside beside Shryock. On the restart Shryock worked on Myer before another caution flag was thrown for the Farrel Skelton spinning modified. On the restart it was Green, Myer, Shryock and Klint Pursley.

Shryock went by Myer on the restart of lap eighteen and battled side by side with Green for the next twenty laps. That was not the only race going on as drivers were racing three wide throughout the field. Drivers had worked up to lap traffic by the end of the race. Green tried going high and Shryock low when all three cars got together going down the backstretch.

Shryock would take the lead going into turn three with Green chasing him. Green tire was going down after all three cars got together and had to settle with a fourth place finish after leading the most laps of the forty lap event. Another driver on the move was Johnny Bone Jr. Pea Ridge, AR who started the race from the fifth row. Bone worked his way past Myer on lap 22 and these two drivers battled it out for the rest of the race.

The race started out with Brad Green and Klint Pursley swapping the lead several times before Green took the top spot from Pursley on lap nine. Green would lead until lap 39. Steve Holzkamper and Pursley would get together on lap thirteen and Holzkamper would get a flat tire and go to the rear of the field.

After the restart the contact would give Pursley a ill handling car and Pursley would hold on for a sixth place finish. Another hard charging driver was Luke Cochran who started twenty first and worked his way up to a tenth place finish.

Rounding out the top five was Brad Green fourth and Dan Daniels fifth.

Winning heat races on Saturday night was John Allen, Kevin Guinn, Rick Wallis, Johnny Bone, Skeet Amason. B-main winners were Steve Miller and Mike Chasteen.

USMTS will take the next week off and will race the following weekend at the Spoon River Speedway in Canton, IL for a $4000 to win main event. This will be the only race of the season at the Spoon River Speedway and a good field of cars is expected for the event. Racing will get underway at 7pm on Friday night and all classes will be running.

All drivers that attend in the support classes will be locked into Saturday’s A-main. For more information call the USMTS office at 515-832-7944.

After two events in the south region Kelly Shryock has taken a twenty point lead over John Allen.
