Wasmund wins in Kasson

KASSON, Minn. -- A beautiful day was in store for drivers and fans at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson and a record car count for a one-day USMTS event was broken. Seventy-two cars checked in for the racing action on Sunday from nine different states.

The good thing of this was rookie contender Nate Wasmund started the race from the fifth row and showed all the USMTS drivers the fast way around the speedway and picked up his first ever USMTS win against a very tough field of modifieds. Wasmund’s win did not come very easy as he had to battle a very strong Justin Boney.

Boney jumped out into the early lead and led until lap eight when Wasmund would get past Boney coming out of turn four. Wasmund and Boney would race side by side for several more laps, by lap twenty-four Boney would take back the top spot and look to be enroute to his third USMTS win of the season.

A hard charging Steve Wetztein was on the move and had worked his way to third by lap twenty-eight and look as if he would challenge for the win, when his tire would let go sending him off the track. By lap thirty-two Wasmund would move his Kraft Kar back around Boney and put some distance on Boney.

Wasmund would run the rest of the race unchallenged and pick up the $2000 paycheck. A very hard charging Scott Drake would beat Boney by inches for the runner-up spot and Boney would settle for third. Rounding out the top five was Mark Noble and Eddie Martin.

This fifty lap main event would run non-stop caution free. This is the second time the USMTS has went caution free at Kasson. With Boney’s third place finish he has moved back into the USMTS National point lead heading into Owatonna, MN Monday race.

After heat races track promoter Jeff Fitzpatrick put some water on the speedway, which really helped the speedway out and the racing went four wide by feature time.

In the first Harris Auto Racing B-main Brad Waits came from the tail to finish second after water was put on the speedway.

Winning the Haulmark Trailer Heat Races were Mark Elliott, Darin Walker, Nate Wasmund, Dean Mahlstadt, Jason Hughes, John VanDenBerg, and Kelly Shryock.

The Harris Auto Racing B-mains were won by Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, and Scott Drake.
