Fraise tops Featherlite/USMTS Fall Jamboree Friday night action

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Night number two of the 5th Annual Featherlite/United States Modified Touring Series rolled onto the track an incredible 266 cars in the pit area. A record 135 USMTS modifieds checked into the gate for the nights racing activities. The racing action was fast on the super fast and tacky race track which also seemed to bring out a very large number of cautions. The heat races and a qualifying "A" main were ran in the WISSOTA Super Stocks an Midwest Modifieds along with a full show for the Street Stocks. The Super Stocks had 38 cars on hand while the Midwest Modifieds found 61 cars check into the back gate along with 32 Street Stocks. Thursday nights racing action was rained out and the makeup for this was moved to Saturday morning so many of the drivers were pulling out onto the track for their first time on Friday night. The one hundred and thirty five modifieds were on hand battling for the first place check of $4,000 on this night.

The Midwest Modified Qualifying feature pulled onto the track first with Chad Herman and Dennis Jones pacing the field. The two ran side by side for the first two laps with Jones taking over the top spot with thirteen laps to go. The first caution of the event came out with twelve laps to go as one of the infield tires flipped out onto the front straight. Shawn Peterson pulled up to do battle with Herman for the second spot on the restart as most of the field ran two and three wide for position further back. Herman regained his composure and battled back under Jones for the top spot. With a caution at the four laps to go mark, Jones bolted back to the front on the restart to take the lead and the win.

The street stock feature pulled onto the track for their $500 to win feature event. The race started off with Travis Krause, Danny Hanson and Tom McEldowney running three wide across the line. Ron Johnson followed the top three across the line with Danny Hanson taking the point early on in the feature event. Johnson moved up to battle with Krause for the second position. These two battled for a couple laps until Johnson slid back and McEldowney pulled past Johnson to battle with Krause for the second spot. These two started to reel in Hanson up front. The final caution flew with 8 laps to go and on the restart Krause powered by on the outside to take over the top spot and held on for the win.

The Super Stock Qualifying Feature found Bill Clemens and Mike Weber on the front row. Clemens pulled out front on the start with the field running three wide behind him. Brandon Jensen moved into the second spot from his second row starting spot at Weber, Scott Lawrence battling for the third position as the field was three side behind them. Clemens held the point with Jensen close behind as the top five pulled away from the field. Troy Langowski and Dave Mass battled for the fifth spot for five laps until Mass cleared and then moved in to challenge the 77 car of Lawrence. At the line it was Clemens with the win.

The next race on tap for the night was the 20-lap $500 to win Non-Qualifier feature for the USMTS modifieds. Dan Olson jumped into the early lead followed by Randy Zimmerman. Al Hejna and Mike Sorensen had a great battle early on for the third spot. Brent Larson worked into the top five early on. With sixteen laps to go Zimmerman moved to the point with Mike Sorensen moving past Olson into the second spot as the first caution flies with fourteen laps left. On the restart Sorensen cleared into the top spot as Zimmerman battled with Hejna for the second spot. Zimmerman was too strong and held onto the second spot as Larson moved up to challenge Hejna in a side by side battle for the third spot. With ten to go Neil Eckhart worked into the top five as the field settled down for the last charge to the checkers. With three to go Sorensen slipped up allowing Zimmerman and Larson to move past into the top two spots respectively. Coming out of four to the checkers Larson had a great run on the top side falling short of the win by less than 1ft. as Zimmerman came home with the win.

The thirty-five lap $4,000 to win feature was on tap next with Jason Hughes and Tommy Myer pacing the field. On the start there was some great three and four wide racing behind them early on. Hughes took the top spot as Tony Fraise and Brian Mullen battled for the fourth position. Fraise set his sights on Dan Bohr next for the third spot and on the next lap took over the third spot. Jim Sandusky and Jason Miller battled for the sixth spot followed closely by Bruce Hanford while further back in the field Mark Noble and Kelly Shryock moved into the eleventh and twelfth place spots. The first caution flew with nineteen to go. Restart four and five wide battles were happening for the first two laps. Up front Fraise moved into the second spot with Tommy Myer trying to hold that spot. Ron Barker worked into the top five as Noble and Shryock moved into the top ten. With thirteen laps to go the top four were two wide and nose to tail as the battled for the top prize. Myer and Fraise started to put some serious pressure on Hughes up front. With nine laps to go Fraise took the top spot Darin Thye and Ron Barker battled for the fifth spot as the great 2 and 3 wide racing continued through the field. Fraise held on for the popular win.
