Sanders pounces late, pockets $5,000 in Red White and Blue Nationals make-up feature

POCOLA, Okla. (May 8, 2026) - Night 1 of the Summit Racing Equipment USMTS presented by RacinDirt.com Red White and Blue Nationals came to a stop Friday night after a downpour hit Tri-State Speedway following heat race action, forcing track and series crews to move the make-up feature to Saturday for a double-feature program.

When the 40-lap make-up main event rolled off, Sybesma Graphics Pole Award winner Rodney Sanders had his hands full. Jim Chisholm started on the outside of the front row and controlled much of the race, leading 28 laps while keeping Sanders at bay.

But Sanders stayed close, waiting for his opening. That moment came when Chisholm checked up in turn 4, allowing “Rocket” Rodney Sanders to slip by. Once the No. 20 took command, he never looked back on his way to the $5,000 victory.

Brandon Davis worked the bottom of the racetrack throughout the feature and charged to a runner-up finish. Chisholm settled for third, Tanner Mullens came home fourth and Gary Christian rounded out the top five.

“I was waiting on Chisholm to make a mistake,” Sanders said in victory lane. “That’s what it was going to take to get by him. When Jim is leading these mains, he’s tough to pass, and he doesn’t screw up often.”

The win marked Sanders’ 128th career USMTS victory and his third at Tri-State Speedway.

Up next will be Saturday's portion of the 2-day show at the Tri-State Speedway. Stay tuned for updates after the completion of Night #2.
