Shryock takes opening night win at 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Nationals

WHEATLAND, Mo. -- The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series visited a new racetrack for the first time Saturday, but it was a familiar face back in the winner's circle as seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, took the opening night victory at the 1st Annual “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Nationals at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.

It was a heated battle early in the race between Eric Turner of Hermitage, Mo., and Shryock as they raced nose-to-tail and side-by-side from lap 3 through 11. Shryock grabbed the top spot on lap 12 and set sail from there, leading the final 19 circuits of the 30-lap preliminary feature.

Turner and Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., raced door-to-door for the next six laps before Myer secured second place. The lone yellow flag was thrown on lap 24 for James McMillin's spin on the backstretch, which bunched the field up for a six-lap shootout to the checkers. Over the next six laps, Myer was unable to track down Shryock and held on for the runner-up spot ahead of Turner.

Scott Drake of Webb City, Mo., moved into the top four during the final six laps to garner the final guaranteed transfer spot into Monday's $5,000-to-win finale. Saturday night's top four finishers will comprise the inside row of the Pole Dash on Monday. Sunday's top four finishers will fill the outside row for the Pole Dash.

The Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors went to Gary Clark of Walker, Mo., who started 19th and finished 7th.

The action continues at the state-of-the-art Lucas Oil Speedway on Sunday, July 2. Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 and racing is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
