Hejna stops the bleeding, scores O’Reilly USMTS win at Pepsi Scotland County Speedway

MEMPHIS, Mo. -- The question going into the final night of the five-day swing for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Untied States Modified Touring Series was, ‘When will Kelly Shryock be beat, and who will beat him?’

That question was answered at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., on Saturday night as Walker Motors & Collision and Spilman Auto Parts presented the 2nd Annual Memphis Shootout.

Mike Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., drew the front row for the 30-lap Holley “A” Main. On the drop of the green flag, Hejna jumped out to the early lead with Burgtorf close behind in second. Hejna held the top spot until lap 5, when Burgtorf slipped by up top to grab the top spot.

Hejna, who worked the bottom of the Speedway, got back by Burgtorf to grab the lead back on lap 6. Hejna and Burgtorf had a great battle for the lead, running the next 12 laps side-by-side around the 3/8-mile oval.

A caution on lap 18 bunched the field back up. On the restart, contact was made behind Hejna which resulted in Burgtorf getting a flat left rear tire and sending him pit side to change it. Hejna once again grabbed the top spot on the restart as Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon, Iowa, and Shryock battled for the second spot.

Hejna pulled away from the second place battle over the final 12 laps to claim his first victory of the season with the O’Reilly USMTS Modified, but more importantly he put an end to Shryock's record 11-race winning streak.

The battle for second place was a great one as Pinkerton edged out Hughes at the line to pick up the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors after starting 11th. Shryock settled for fourth, with Ryan Ruter of Forest City, Iowa, coming from 10th to round out the top five.

The next race for the O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will be Tuesday, Aug. 15, for the first-ever visit to the half-mile West Liberty (Iowa) Raceway.
