Shryock snares O’Reilly Auto Parts Fall Classic, takes control in ‘The Hunt’

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Events on Sunday afternoon at Bolivar Speedway USA could not have unfolded any better for Kelly Shryock. Trailing Zack VanderBeek by two points in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship entering Sunday's O’Reilly Auto Parts Fall Classic finale, Shryock needed a good finish coupled with some good luck to regain control of his own destiny.

The racing surface at the high-banked clay oval quickly turned dry during qualifying heat races, eventually becoming “rubbered down” during the final two heats. With tires blistering after just 10 laps, drivers knew that starting positions and tire strategy would weigh heavy in the 35-lap main event.

While Shryock earned the most Home Pride Passing Points to garner a redraw spot in the main event, VanderBeek suffered a flat tire in his heat race and was forced to take a provisional starting spot on the Holley "A" Main after failing to finish the second Real Racing Wheels "B" Main. With VanderBeek starting 23rd in the 25-car field, a youngster from the grandstands stepped up and drew the pole position for Shryock to start the main event.

As anticipated, the main event was riddled with cautions -- 13 in all -- as the abrasive track surface took its toll on right rear tires.  Of the 15 drivers who finished the race only five were on the same tires they started the contest with. In all, 15 of the 25 starters suffered a flat tire.

Shryock, however, never changed tires and never relinquished the top spot as he captured his 30th O’Reilly USMTS main event of the season. The win was worth $3,000 as he eclipsed $100,000 in earnings for the 2006 racing season. One of the drivers that did change a tire during the feature was VanderBeek as he struggled to a 12th-place finish, resulting in Shryock gaining control of ‘The Hunt’ points standings over VanderBeek (1,102 to 1,080) with just one weekend of racing left to go.

Although he led every lap, Shryock nearly led all but the final lap as Jeremy Payne of Cave City, Ark., made a bid for the top spot on the final lap, but fell one car-length short of capturing his career-first O’Reilly USMTS checkers. Storm Lake, Iowa's Brad McEwan held the runner-up spot for the first 33 laps before falling victim to Payne and finishing third. None of the top-3 finishers suffered a flat tire during the 35-lapper.

After starting 16th on the grid and changing a tire midway through the contest, Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., took home a fourth-place paycheck and found himself solidly in third place in ‘The Hunt’ standings just 48 markers behind VanderBeek. Myer changed a tire early in the feature race Sunday, moved up to score fifth at the finish and jumped to fourth in ‘The Hunt’ rankings with 980 points. Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., who was a victim of mechanical gremlins all weekend, slipped to fifth in the points after a DNF and 24th place finish on Sunday.

After 57 races at 33 tracks in nine States, The O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will wrap their nine-month campaign with the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5.
