Shryock returns to winning ways at Corning

CORNING, Iowa - Patience paid off for Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock as he sped to victory in the Holley “A” Main Tuesday as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. The win, worth $2,000 to the eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ, was his seventh National Event win of the season in 15 races -- his first in four starts in the tough Western Region.

From the outside of the front row, Shryock muscled his way to the front to lead the first two laps before polesitter Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., powered around on the high side of the multi-grooved half-mile oval to grab the lead. For the next 18 laps, Friesen and Shryock raced side-by-side in the turns and nose-to-tail in the straight-aways with Friesen clinging to a one- or two-car-length advantage with each pass beneath the flagstand.

As the leaders completed lap 20, Shryock was able to edge in front of Friesen entering turn 3 and grabbed control of the top spot on lap 21. Two laps later, the engine in Friesen's No. 1F BMS Modified expired and a shot at victory disintegrated into a 23rd-place finish.

Shryock looked to be able to cruise to an easy win with eight laps to go, 10 car-lengths between himself and Dean Mahlstedt and a three-car battle for third between Chris Spieker, Mike Hejna and Jason Krohn. With five laps to go, however, Spieker's machine suffered mechanical problems and he drifted over the turn 2 embankment to bring out the race's second caution flag. On the restart, Krohn, who started 19th in the 24-car field, powered past Mahlstedt and set his sights on Shryock. Despite his charge through the field, Krohn only had a second-place car and Shryock held him at bay to the finish.

Mahlstedt, who won the previous night at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, held on for third, with Hejna fourth and Zack VanderBeek in fifth. sixth through 10th were Jason Hughes, Jon Tesch, Al Hejna, Scott Green and NASCAR rising star Clint Bowyer.

Bowyer, who finished eighth in Monday's rain-delayed NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway, struggled with his No. 07 Jack Daniels Skyrocket in his heat race, but entertained the fans with two great runs in the first Real Racing Wheels “B” Main and the main event. Bowyer will compete with the O’Reilly USMTS two more times this season on July 31 at the West Liberty (Iowa) Raceway and August 1 at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Other winners during Tuesday night's event were Chris Smyser (USRA Late Models), Tony Hardisty (Stock Cars) and Mathew Hudson (Hobby Stocks).

The next stop for the O’Reilly USMTS will be Wednesday for a Central Region tilt at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Pit gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and grandstand gates will swing open at 5:00. Hot laps start at 7:00 and the first green flag is scheduled to wave at 7:30. Also on the racing card will be the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

The Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster is located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). Day-of-race info is available by calling the track hotline at (641) 673-7004 or visit www.rlpromotions.com/oskaloosa online.
