Krohn KO’s O’Reilly USMTS field at Park Jefferson

JEFFERSON, S.D. — A huge crowd of race fans were in attendance as the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Park Jefferson Speedway Tuesday. What they got was one of the biggest fields of the season, a special appearance by NASCAR stars Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace and one of the most exciting main events of the year.

Wallace got the lively throng of onlookers excited early as he raced from the back to the front in winning the sixth heat race. With the win, Wallace earned the AFCO Pole Award, guaranteeing him one of the first eight starting spots in the Holley "A" Main.

Getting the pole position for the 35-lap nightcap, however, was local favorite Chris Mills of Sioux City, Iowa, as he drew the no. 1 starting spot to the delight of the audience. Mills led the first lap, but his reign was short-lived as Jay Noteboom, who started seventh, scooted around the top side of turns 1-2 to snag the top spot after just a lap and a half. With the crowd screaming their approval, Noteboom dove low in turn 3 to shut the door on Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., and lead lap 2.

Noteboom stretched out his lead over the next four laps as eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, moved into third behind Hughes. The pair chipped began chipping away at Noteboom's advantage with Hughes getting around the leader as he bobbled in turn 2. One lap later, Shryock disposed of Noteboom and the race was on between the two veterans.

While both drivers ran nose-to-tail around the low side of turns 3-4, Hughes continued to chew away on the thin cushion atop turns 1-2 while Shryock remained faithful to the low groove around the first left-hander. A slight twitch by Hughes in turn 4 opened the door for Shryock as he slipped underneath to lead lap 16. Hughes drove around Shryock to lead the next lap, however, as the leaders hit lapped traffic for the first time.

Three laps later, Hughes and Shryock split the lapped car of Bob Moore with Shryock getting the advantage and leading the 20th orbit. Shryock stretched out his lead over the next five laps while Hughes struggled to get around Moore, allowing Noteboom to close in on him for the runner-up spot. After clearing the traffic jam, Hughes began reeling in Shryock again as Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., moved up to third, followed by Noteboom, Wallace and Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb.

With four laps remaining and an eight-car-lengths advantage, Shryock appeared to be headed for his ninth O’Reilly USMTS National Event win of the season but the race's first and only caution flag waved for a spin in turn 1. This allowed the field to bunch up behind Shryock for the restart with Hughes opting for the outside for the double-file restart and Krohn to the inside.

At the drop of the green flag, Shryock took off into turn 1 with Krohn following hi on the low side. Shryock slid up ever so slightly exiting turn 2, but it was enough to open the door for Krohn as he zipped past his fellow Skyrocket Chassis competitor to lead lap 32. From there, Krohn ran away from the pack and took a 10-car-lengths cushion over Shryock at the checkered flag.

The win, worth $2,000, was Krohn's third of the season in just nine starts. Shryock settled for the runner-up finish ahead of Hughes, while Friesen charged to fourth at the finish. Wallace rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Zack VanderBeek had to burn one of his provisionals to get in the main event and started 24th, but the 2004 Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year made the most of it as he sliced his way through the field for a sixth-place paycheck and the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors. Al Hejna was seventh, Jon Tesch finished eighth and Mike Hejna scored an ninth-place finish in his first outing with a new Bullet Chassis. Seventeen-year-old Jake Neal rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Up next, the rugged road warriors of the O’Reilly USMTS trek to Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D., on Wednesday where Schrader and Wallace will be competing with the regular rugged road warriors. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., with hot laps at 7:00 and racing at 7:30. Schrader and Wallace will host an autograph session for fans from 5:30-6:30. Huset's Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located east of Brandon on I-90 to Exit 406, then 2.5 miles south on SR 11.
