Skaggs earns second USMTS Southern Series win at Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. — Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla., recorded his second USMTS Southern Series victory of the season Friday, winning the Commercial Bank 35 presented by Larry Shaw Race Cars, Bad Boy Mowers and Mark Martin Ford at the Monticello (Ark.) Speedway. With a $3,000 top prize on the line, a whopping field of 73 name-brand drivers showed up — a record car count for the inaugural season of the USMTS Southern Series.

After winning his heat race and earning the most Home Pride Passing Points, Skaggs drew the third starting spot for the Holley "A" Main and took just two laps to overtake polesitter Patrick Linn for the top spot. Once out front, Skaggs was untouchable for the remaining 33 laps. It was his fourth overall win, having won two O’Reilly USMTS National Events this season as well.

The rest of the top-5 finishers passed a combined 55 cars in order to make to the front. Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., raced from 16th on the grid to take the runner-up paycheck, while Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn.,  finished third after starting 10th. Eight-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champ Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, used a provisional — his first in more than 100 events — to earn a berth in the main event. He made the most of it and gave the fans their money's worth with a drive from 23rd to 4th in 35 laps. Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., finished fifth after starting 20th.

Dustin Hyde was sixth, Jeff Taylor seventh, Tommy Weder Jr. eighth, Linn hung on for ninth and 22nd-starting Sean Jones rounded out the top-10 finishers.

With 10 races in the books, Shryock continues as the USMTS Southern Series points leader (922 to 775) over Timms. Weder dropped to third with 773 points, followed by Skaggs (751), Holzkamper (735), VanderBeek (721), Hughes (712), Sanders (629), Burford (601) and Morton (586).

Like each of the four regions comprising the 56-race O’Reilly USMTS National Events schedule, the 24-race USMTS Southern Series will boast a separate points fund and drivers competing in the USMTS Southern Series will have the opportunity to qualify to compete in ’The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. The top 10 in USMTS Southern Series points at the start of ’The Hunt’ will qualify, as well as all other drivers with perfect attendance at USMTS Southern Series events up to that date.

The American Racer KK704 is the Official Tire of the USMTS Southern Series, but drivers not competing for points and/or points funds have the option to utilize the Hoosier G60 tire. There is no requirement that a driver purchase a USMTS license to compete in any USMTS event. However, benefits enjoyed by licensed drivers includes bonus payouts, increased tow money, contingency awards, points funds eligibility, provisional starting spots, increased media recognition, a personalized driver profile page at www.usmts.com and more.

The USMTS Southern Series gives top drivers from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and surrounding areas a touring format that pits the best of the best in Modified racing under the banner of America’s top Modified touring series.
