Krohn KO's O’Reilly USMTS field at Oskaloosa again

Krohn KO's O’Reilly USMTS field at Oskaloosa again

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The stars and cars of the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series took on superspeedway aces Clint Bowyer, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace on Wednesday night for the inaugural NASCAR vs. USMTS Showdown presented by MUSCO Lighting and Aaron's Sales & Lease Ownership at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

A jam-packed grandstand was on hand to see the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers take on the best of the best in dirt Modified racing. While all three fared well, nobody had anything for Jason Krohn.

Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year contender Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, grabbed the lead at the drop of Ryne Staley's green flag and led the first seven laps of the 30-lap Holley "A" Main before a caution flag slowed the action. On the restart, Krohn powered ahead of Gustin to lead lap 8, and that was the closest anybody got to Krohn after that. Winning by a full straight-away, Krohn steered his No. 7 Skyrocket to his fourth O’Reilly USMTS National Event win of the season — his second straight at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster.

The win was worth $2,000 to the farmer from Slayton, Minn., and moved him into the top-10 in national points despite having just 18 National Event starts. It was also the 24th victory this season for the Skyrocket Nation.

AFCO Pole Award winner Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, ran second for a majority of the race, but lost the runner-up spot late in the race to Dean Mahlstedt. Mahlstedt may have been the only car capable of beating Krohn, but started 17th in the 24-car field. After passing 15 cars in the main event, Mahlstedt earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors.

VanderBeek hung on for third while Ken Schrader of Concord, N.C., was fourth and Gustin took home a fifth-place paycheck. Kenny Wallace, Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr., Jake Neal and Brad Pinkerton rounded out the top-10 finishers. NASCAR ace Bowyer wound up 17th.

The next event on the USMTS calendar is another Central Region shootout as the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors make their annual return to the Knox County Fairgrounds in Knoxville, Ill., for the Ed Sheckler Memorial at Knoxville presented by The UPS Store. Friday will find the tour at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield (Iowa) Speedway for another Central Region clash before wrapping up the five-race swing at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., for the final event in the Central Region and the Ed Sheckler Memorial at Memphis presented by Pepsi.

Schrader, who christened his new Skyrocket Chassis Wednesday night, will also be competing at both Knoxville and Bloomfield.
