Shryock nips Krohn in O’Reilly USMTS National Tour thriller at Buena Vista Raceway

Shryock nips Krohn in O’Reilly USMTS National Tour thriller at Buena Vista Raceway

ALTA, Iowa – The only two drivers ever to wear the championship belt of the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour slugged it out again Tuesday night as a packed house looked on at the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta, Iowa.

Defending O’Reilly USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., overpowered race-long leader Brandon Kenny on lap 21 of the 30-lap Holley "A" Main. Two laps later, eight-time O’Reilly USMTS National Champ Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, muscled past Kenny to take over the second spot and set his sights on the leader.

With four laps to go, the battle royale waged on as 11th-starting Shryock pulled up alongside Krohn. Two laps later, Shryock crossed the stripe first to take the lead.

As the white flag waved, the pair of heavyweights tip-toed through the first turn before racing side by side down the entire length of the back stretch. The two made contact in the middle of turns 3 and 4, but the body-slamming didn't stop there as the duo scratched, scraped and banged all the way to the flagstand with Shryock taking the win by the length of his front bumper.

The win was worth $2,000 to Shryock, who won his third event in the last four races and eighth overall for the 2008 season. Krohn had to settle for the runner-up paycheck for the second time in his last three starts while Kenny finished third to match his career-best USMTS showing and solidify his place atop the Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year standings.

Another rookie contender and fellow Woodward, Okla., resident, Dereck Ramirez wound up fourth ahead of Westville, Okla.'s Jason Hughes. Tommy Weder Jr. finished sixth to give Sooner State pilots four of the top six spots, with Jay Noteboom in seventh. Scott Green and Al Hejna finished eighth and ninth, respectively, while Mike Steensma rounded out the top-10 finishers in his first USMTS start of 2008.

Of note, NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader was third during the late stages of the race, but blew a motor and did not finish. Schrader is looking for better luck tomorrow night at Huset's Speedway where he blew a motor last year while leading the USMTS feature.

With the victory, Shryock broke a tie with Zack VanderBeek for the points lead in the Great Plains Region and leads VanderBeek by 39 markers (488 to 449) after four of nine scheduled events in the region. Four more of those will be completed by Saturday.

Jon Tesch sits third in the rankings with 425 points, followed by Weder (372), Kenny (370), Ramirez (347), Krohn (338), Green (337), Hejna (328) and Justin Boney (325).
