Waits win again, dominates O'Reilly USMTS National Tour stop at Fountain City

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. – Brad Waits picked up right where he left off on Thursday night as he captured the main event Friday night when the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour invaded the Tri-Oval Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.

Waits, who had finished in the runner-up spot in his four previous starts this season, led the final 10 laps of Thursday's feature then proceeded to dominate Friday's nightcap, leading all 35 circuits from his outside front row starting spot.

The win, worth $2,000, catapulted the Zumbrota, Minn., ace into third place in earnings for drivers in the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region, despite having raced in just half of the eight events.

Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, started on the pole of Friday's Holley "A" Main, but was no match for Waits and had to settle for second-place at the checkered flag. Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., finished third, while AFCO Pole Award winner Bob Timm of Rollingstone, Minn., wound up fourth ahead of 17th-starting and KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award winner Tim Donlinger of Rochester, Minn.

Jason Hughes, Scott Green, Jake Neal, Josh Angst and Al Hejna finished sixth through tenth, respectively.

With one event remaining in the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region, Donlinger holds a healthy 36-point advantage (721 to 685) over Hughes in the points battle. VanderBeek sits third with 659 markers, followed by Hejna (643), Kelly Shryock (632), Brandon Kenny (564), Timm (560), Alan Mondus (549), Dereck Ramirez (529) and Dan Bohr (492).

Bohr, who finished 11th in Friday's feature race, jumped five spots in the rankings. As one of the drivers among the top-10 in points, Bohr will be eligible for the Top Dog Bonus when the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour visits the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway next Tuesday, July 29, for the final event in the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region.

Next Tuesday's event at Cresco will feature Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace in action, along with Jimmy Spencer as "Mr. Excitement" will serve as Grand Marshall and Master of Ceremonies. Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:45 and the first heat race is slated for 7:15.
