Shryock wins Night one of USMTS Northern Challenge at Jackson

JACKSON, Minn. -- With cloudy skies and another cool day a total of 73 cars checked in for night number one of nineteen for the United States Modified Touring Series’ Northern Challenge at the Jackson Speedway. When the checkered flag fell it was Kelly Shryock, Forest City IA, besting the 42 car Modified field. Trent Schroeder, Worthington MN took home the win in the Stock car class and it was David Ross, Reading MN, winning the Hobby Stock feature race.

Three different drivers led during the 30-lap USMTS feature event. At the start of the race the caution flag flew right away when four cars got together in turns three and four. That brought the field back for a complete restart. On the restart it was Kelly Shryock getting the lead from his pole starting position. Shryock would lead the races first two laps uncontested when the first of several yellow flags came out. Once again several cars got together in turn three, almost blocking the track. After the track was cleared and racing resumed Shryock was able to keep the field behind him. However he would not be racing for long as the red flag flew on the restart when again several cars got together in turn three, which saw one car even flip over. All drivers were ok and when the race resumed it was once again Shryock out front. Once some laps got in the books, the field spread out and Shryock managed to gain some ground over second place running Tommy Myer, Blooming Prairie MN. But as the laps went on Myer was slowing gaining on Shryock and on the seventh lap the two were side by side going through turns three and four. As the race continued on, the field started to spread out single file, but once the leaders started to work lap traffic on lap thirteen there was another race for the lead. Once again Shryock and Myer were back at it fighting for the lead through the half way point in the race. After having to take a provisional to even get in the A Feature Mark Noble was on the move through the field and had worked his way up to fifth by lap fifteen. The running order at this point saw Shryock out front followed by Myer, Jason Krohn, Slayton MN, Justin Boney, LaMars IA, and Mark Noble running in the top five. The leaders would run in this order for only a couple of laps. On lap 17 the next caution came out. This time for high speed bumper tag. A slow car among the leaders forced Jason Krohn into the back of John VanDenBerg, Oskaloosa IA, both drivers were forced to the pit area. On the restart, six cars got together on the front straightway bringing out yet another caution. On the next restart Mark Noble was gaining spots and on the 18th lap was able to get by Tommy Myer and move into second. Noble would ride in the second spot for two laps when he made his move going into turn three to take the top spot from Shryock. Noble would lead the next lap and that would be it for him, as something went wrong on his car forcing him out of the race. That handed the lead over to second place running Justin Boney. Boney would than lead the next several laps. The final caution of the race came out on lap 25 when Aaron Betz, Avoca MN, lost a right rear tire. On the restart, Boney was able to hold off Shryock but not for long as the two raced side by side with just three laps to go. The next three laps Shryock and Boney raced each other hard each wanting the number one spot. Boney held off Shryock through most the last lap but could not hold him off at the line as Shryock beat Boney at the finish line by about a half a car length. Justin Boney had to settle for second with Tommy Myer taking third followed by Jon Tesch, Watertown SD, and Al Hejna, Ventura IA. The B features were won by Mark Elliott, Webster City IA and Eddie Martin, Stillwell OK. Heat race winners were Ted Anderson, Springfield MN, Jason Krohn, Tommy Myer and Kelly Shryock.

Only one caution flag slowed Trent Schroeder on his way to victory lane in the 15 lap Stock Car feature race. At the drop of the green it was Schroeder getting the early lead from his outside pole starting position. Pole sitter Jeff Nielsen would settle in behind Schroeder followed by Matt Gilbertson. The field would race this way for the first laps of the race. The only caution came out on lap eight for Mark DeBoer who slowed in turn one. On the restart Schroeder was able to keep Nielsen behind him along with Gilbertson. Schroeder than led the remaining laps and went on to take the win. He was followed by Jeff Nielsen, Matt Gilbertson, Scott Bauer and Jared Anderson, Sherburn MN. Heat race winners were Trent Schroeder and Mark DeBoer.

A red flag stopped action right away in the 12-lap Hobby Stock feature race. At the drop of the green Matt Hagedorn, Royal IA crashed hard on the front straightaway, also involved was mishap was Jerry Gronewold, Worthington MN and Troy Woelber, Hull IA. All were ok and done for the night as their cars were heavily damaged. On the complete restart it was Heath Tenkley, Hartley IA, getting the lead from his outside row one starting spot. Tenkley led until the races first caution for Aaron Hanson, Armstrong IA, who went off the track in turn two. On the restart Tenkley was able to hold off second place running David Ross. On the next lap though Tenkley failed to keep Ross behind him as Ross was able to get by him at the line. However on the next lap it was Tenkley returning the favor and getting the lead back from Ross. Tenkley would stay out front for a couple of more laps only to be passed once again by Ross on lap nine. With three laps to go there was a very close race for the lead among Ross, Tenkley as well as Terry Buchman, Superior IA. With the white flag waving over the speedway Tenkley again moved back into the lead. However he was unable to maintain the top spot and lost to a very hard charging David Ross who passed him on the back straightaway coming out of turn two. Ross would than go on to take the win and was followed by Heath Tenkley, Terry Buchman, Jeff Senne, Fairmont MN and Adam McCoy, Brewster MN. Heat race winners were Matt Hagedorn and Terry Buchman.

This Saturday will be the Polaris Industries Special at the Jackson Speedway featuring the WISSOTA Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Stock cars, Hobby Stocks and 360 Modifieds. Hot laps will be at 6:45 p.m. with racing to follow.
