Chapman sweeps USMTS Modifieds both nights at DCS

KASSON, Minn. -- It was another perfect night for racing at the Dodge County Speedway on Labor Day. USMTS Modifieds were on hand again tonight, along with WISSOTA Super Stocks.

The first feature event of the evening was the 30 lap $1000 to win WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Kelly Anderson had the luck of the draw and would start from the pole with Dan Nissalke to his outside. Bill Clemens and Dustin Nelson would duke it out for the track championship, with this being the final night for track points. Kelly Anderson sat third in the points and had a mathematical chance, but in reality, it would be a showdown between Nelson and Clemens.

At the drop of the green, Anderson shot out front followed by MarkOltjenbruns and Nissalke. Ryan Siegle brought out the first caution with a spin in turn four.

When racing resumed, a great three car battle for fourth developed between Clemens, Jake Pogones, and Dave Mass. Clemens won out in this won, and soon after, moved up to third. Clemens then started to pressure Oltjenbruns for second, while Dave Mass went to the cushion. Mass had the momentum going and would drive by Clemens and Oltjenbruns to take over second. Oltjenbruns got back around Clemens and challenged Mass for second, while Clemens and Nissalke were side by side for fourth. Anderson was looking good out front, and the great battle behind him would be broken up when Clemens got in to the back of Oltjenbruns, sending him around. Clemens would be charged with the caution and sent to the tail of the field. This would put Clemens in somewhat of a hole for the points battle. Nelson was running strong and would be fifth on the restart.

Anderson was still holding down the top spot followed by Oltjenbruns, Mass, Nissalke, and Nelson. Oltjenbruns kept pace with Anderson for a couple laps but once again, Anderson started to pull away, running the bottom to perfection. Mass was still riding the cushion, and got by Oltjenbruns for second. Mass closed the gap on Anderson and got side by side a couple times but Anderson remained smooth and steady. Nelson moved up to fourth past Nissalke while Anderson started to pull away from Mass out front.

There would be one more caution with six laps to go, and Mass tried in vain to make the top work to get by Anderson on the restart. But Anderson was not to be denied the big paycheck and went on to win followed by Mass, Nelson, Oltjenbruns, and Nissalke.

Clemens made up enough ground from the tail of the field, edging out Nelson by a mere four points to win the track championship.

Next up was the USMTS 50 lap main event. After the top eight drivers in passing points re-drew on the frontstretch, it was Sunday night's winner, Dan Chapman again would have luck on his side, and re-drew to start from the pole. A familiar face to most at the Dodge County Speedway, Bob Timm would start from outside row one.

Chapman was looking to make it back to back feature wins, and when the green flag dropped, he picked up right where he left off on Sunday night. Timm fell in to second followed by Bruce Hanford. Corey Dripps looked racy from the start and came up to challenge Hanford and Timm. Dripps would drive by both on the outside, taking over second. Hanford also got by Timm to take over third. Timm fought back, and would soon have the third spot back. Hanford and Timm raced side by side for position for a good portion of the opening laps. Chapman was still out front but Dripps was not far behind. The first caution came on lap seven for debris on the track in turn four.

On the restart, it was Chapman, Dripps, Hanford, Timm, and Bruce Angst rounding out the top five.

When racing resumed, Tommy Myer cracked the top five and was up to fourth. The caution flew again soon after, this time for an incident with Nate Wasmund and Jerry Young on the backstretch.

On the next restart, Angst got by Timm for fourth, while Dripps was challenging on the high side for the lead. Chapman continued to be on a rail around the bottom and held his ground. The caution waved again on lap 11 when Steve Wetzstein slowed with mechanical troubles in turn four.

Bob Timm got the jump on Angst on the next restart and took over fourth once again, while Angst tried to hold off Myer for fifth. Hanford took second from Dripps, but it would not last long as Dripps conitinued to use momentum around the cushion, moving back up to second. Hanford would not go away though, and continued to challenge Dripps for the second spot.

Jason Hughes was having a strong run and looking to crack the top five, challenging Myer for position. Hughes made the pass for fifth, while Chapman was running away out front, to nearly a straightaway lead over Dripps and Hanford. Timm was picking up the pace, and caught Dripps to take over the third position as the laps wound down. Dripps started to fade towards the end, after looking like he might be the only car to outrun Chapman tonight early on. Hughes got by Dripps to take over fourth, and Chapman would cruise to his second clean sweep in two nights of racing at the Dodge County Speedway. Hanford, Timm, Hughes, and Kelly Shryock rounded out the top five.

A great Labor Day weekend of racing at the Dodge County Speeway. Regular racing resumes on Sunday, September 8th with racing in all four divisions. If you have questions or need more information, please call (507) 775-7091 or visit our website at www.dodgecountyspeedway.com See you at the races!!
