USMTS to bring top Modified drivers to Powercom Park May 22-23

BEAVER DAM, Wis. -- Some the country's top modified race car drivers will converge on The Raceway at Powercom Park May 22nd and 23rd as the United States Modified Touring Series presents the Prestige Custom Cabinetry Open Wheel Weekend.

Two full racing programs will be contested on the high banked 1/3-mile clay oval with the USMTS modifieds headlining each night. Also on the card each evening will be the Dodge Central Credit Union Street Stocks, Gibbsville Cheese Legend Cars, and Wally's Auto Dirt Devils. Racing will begin at 7:00 pm Saturday and 6:00 pm Sunday.

As many as 50 drivers are expected in the modified division during the course of the weekend. Traveling stars will include defending USMTS champion Kelly Shryock, Minnesota drivers Mark Noble, Tommy Myer, and Tim Donlinger, along with Al and Mike Hejna of Iowa, and North Dakota veteran John Tesch.

The local contigent will be led out of the gate by Beaver Dam's Jay Schraufnagel. He will be joined by some of the top campaigners in Northeastern Wisconsin including Mike Wedelstadt, Julie McDermid, Scott and Brian Mullen, Mike Mashl, and Dennis Schultz.

"It looks like it will be the outsiders against the locals in this one," said Rex Melius, General Manager for Wisconsin Motorsports, Inc. "I like the chances our drivers have here at Powercom Park. It's a tough little track to get a handle on. It should be a great weekend of racing for us.

"Any time you can bring in the best drivers in a particular division it gives the fans something extra to see. This is the best of the best when it comes to traveling modified shows. And with $2,000 to win each night's feature race you never know who else will give it a shot."

Shyrock is off to a blazing start in pursuit of the USMTS title. Winner of six sanctioned shows to date in 2004, Shyrock will enter the weekend at Beaver Dam with 14 top 10 finishes in 15 USMTS starts.

"Kelly is something special when it comes to modified racing," said USMTS director Todd Staley. "He is about as good as they come at setting up a car and making it work. Any time you can drive all over the country, use the basic track rules, and win races you are on top of your game. Kelly has done that for years.

"Part of the USMTS philosophy is to have the best drivers from the local tracks come out and race against the best in the country and see what they can do. It's really and us against them type thing to see who is better. It works well."

The Raceway at Powercom Park is located just off of Highway 151 on Highway 33 in Beaver Dam. For more information contact the track office at (920) 887-1600.
